Neurons growing in a cell culture
These time lapse animations use phase contrast microscopy to show neural stem cells in a nutrient medium for 4 hours. They reveal the dynamic growth and recycling of dendrites and synapses as neurons establish relationships with each other. The social behavior of these cells creates the incredible properties of the mind and brain.

My grandfather hated clocks.
Clocks, he said, were deceptive in their construction. They mapped time onto a circle, and told us that every hour, minute, second repeated itself once every day. Around them, we let our guards down, slipped into the easy comfort of repetition, and closed our eyes to the truth: Time was no circle.

He exhaled his very last sigh of regret, and as I closed his eyes, I opened mine: Every second, once passed, was lost forever.

This RECord unfortunately disappeared off of hitRECord (along with other, far more brilliant RECords, and I can only hope that the bunch of them have found peace and happiness in RECord heaven), but here is my On The Road poster’s reupload/reincarnation: http://www.hitrecord.org/records/1310613
To be honest, when I first discovered that this RECord and all of the delightful remarks and hearts it brought me were gone, I felt rather dejected and weary, as if it were some act of cosmic interference, telling me to give up on this road and turn back. But the hitRECord team is, as always, an incredible bunch, and discovered the root of the problem (which is, apparently, that these spirited away RECords were used as icons for RECords that were deleted, fancy that!) So here I am, stepping over a little bump on the very long and exciting road hitRECord has let me travel, and I can’t thank all of you (the team and everyone who has ever supported me) enough.
And let me reiterate that RandomProcessVol2.0’s “Night road” is truly a thing of beauty, and this remix was a mere consequence of its brilliance.
